Flexion Distraction (FD) Therapy

Flexion-Distraction (FD) therapy is a specialized chiropractic technique used to treat spinal conditions, particularly those affecting the lumbar (lower) spine. This therapy involves specific table positioning and gentle distraction forces to create space in the spine, promoting disc decompression and alleviating symptoms associated with disc herniation, degeneration, and nerve compression. Here’s how FD therapy works:

  1. Table Positioning: Patients lie face down on a specially designed treatment table that allows for controlled movements and positioning. The table features movable sections that can be adjusted to accommodate different areas of the spine and facilitate specific therapeutic techniques.
  2. Flexion Component: During FD therapy, the chiropractor applies controlled flexion (forward bending) movements to the patient’s spine. This flexion component helps to stretch and elongate the spinal column, particularly the intervertebral discs, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues.
  3. Distraction Forces: In addition to flexion movements, FD therapy involves the application of gentle distraction forces along the length of the spine. These distraction forces are applied manually by the chiropractor or through mechanical means using the treatment table. The goal is to create space between the vertebrae, reducing pressure on the intervertebral discs and spinal nerves.
  4. Disc Decompression: The combination of flexion and distraction forces during FD therapy promotes disc decompression. As the spine is gently stretched and tractioned, negative pressure is created within the intervertebral discs. This negative pressure can help to draw herniated or bulging disc material back into place, relieving pressure on nearby nerves and reducing inflammation.
  5. Promotion of Healing: FD therapy not only decompresses the discs but also promotes healing and tissue repair. The gentle stretching and mobilization of the spine stimulate blood flow, oxygenation, and nutrient delivery to the affected tissues. Improved circulation facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products and inflammatory substances, accelerating the body’s natural healing process.

Overall, Flexion-Distraction therapy is a safe and effective treatment option for various spinal conditions, including disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and spinal stenosis. By using specific table positioning and gentle distraction forces, FD therapy aims to create space in the spine, relieve pressure on spinal structures, and alleviate pain and discomfort associated with spinal dysfunction.
